Make sure you have water!
What about food
As long as you have water, you can go for days without food. Of course, it's nice to have something to eat to keep your energy up, and to keep kids comfortable and quiet. That said, we find lots of affordable choices for long-lasting food that can give you quick energy.
You don't need "emergency food"
This is one of the reasons we shy away from pre-made "emergency kits." Most of them come with emergency food bars, or military MRE (meals ready to eat). Most of the reviews of these products are pretty bad. These bars are usually packed with tons of sugar (to get the calorie count up) and taste pretty bad. Some of the products are dehydrated foods you cook with boiling water to make what seems like full meals. But again, we aren't trying to become urban survivalists or live through the zombie apocalypse... we're just trying to make sure we can get through 3 days on our own.
There are lots of choices of food that will last for years in their sealed packages. Of course, your personal preferences are your own, but we tend to prefer natural products that pack a long-lasting punch. Peanut butter, almonds, raisins, biltong (like beef jerky but way better), tuna fish. If you want a protein energy bar we prefer those from Clif.
Here are our choices:
Now don't forget to stay hydrated!

About our methodology
We spent hours reviewing materials from FEMA (the US Federal Emergency Management Agency), the Red Cross, the Humane Society as well as a host of other government and non-governmental organizations to put together the checklist of necessary items. We then spent many more hours reviewing products. We look for quality, completeness without overkill, high customer ratings, and price. We read the customer reviews and note their experience. And of course, these are the items we personally bought.
